here’s a book report i made as a make-up for a missed quiz in gepsych. argg. which i forgot the title. i’ll try to search for it. i can’t even remember the story.
The chapter talks primarily about the growth and religion of different people. How each individual is connected in some weird way to any religion? Assuming the belief that each individual has his own religion, it is that something that leads him to his rituals in life. Religion, as stated in the articles is affected primarily on culture. Concerning how a person is brought up, his beliefs as a structure in a family, and the way he acts around society. Religion is affected by culture, as shown in the many articles that are divided on experiences of many different people. As shown, a character that is revealed at the start was Kathy, she was a simple girl but very much paralyzed with the controversies that surrounded her and her family growing up. She was said to be growing up with a dad who is known to be a drunkard but she still had a mother who was a very strong woman. A strong woman in the sense that she makes things seem okay amidst many different difficulties that surround her family, she was a religious individual though. Kathy had only a problem with her mother, that she was a controlling individual. Always telling Kathy what to do and not to do in her life, basically not making her free of what she really wants. Kathy was deeply disturbed because of the many different happenings that came into her life, but even though she had the problems at hand she remained a religious individual even though she was not really like that and was only forced by her mother to be that way. Making religion seem more like an obligation rather than that of a choice for an individual like Kathy. Growing up, because of the tension that surrounded Kathy her problems were rooted mainly because of her mother, complications with her husband and because of her religion, she was married but before that she was a religious person who often went to church but ever since that marriage she seemed to quit going to church because of the fear that she may sin a lot more with her having different cruel intentions in mind, she was scared and through this cowardice she often murmured on a prayer which lasted for about 5 minutes long, she often said this because of the fear of God. Eventually through constant therapy she waived upon her fears by letting go of her religion or faith. Surprisingly, Kathy worked out just fine, she was succeeding in her career and went to her peak. The next article in the book talks about another patient who was much less religious in her background growing up and had a kind of pessimistic over view with what life really is. A person who was wearing unpleasant clothes in the public, carrying with her handbags which are disturbing to the eye and among other people it was quite unappealing to the person, her name was Marcia. She did not normally believe in such concepts as religion and spirituality, she was as she said an atheist. Meaning that she was not a person who believes in that kind of lifestyle, which was being religious as stated. She was under therapy for more than a year, 2 years to be exact. During sessions with the psychologist she was often questioned about her past as to what happened when she was young, more so, her problem was implicated with her lack of religion because of her family background, her parents were brilliant but did not pay her much attention growing up. This affected her problem very well but it was ok because one day came and Marcia was slowly but surely improving because her psychologist was surprised with the kind of clothes and bags that she was steadily changing, making the kind of things that she used to wear very useless. This was influenced because Marcia was starting to believe in something, a sudden change making her non-atheist and making her a religious person from then on and helped with her success in life more evident thus really boosting her self esteem as an individual. The next case was about Theodore, he was a very successful student at first but in time due to some incidents in life, he started to look down on himself. Started to drink a lot due to a break up with his girlfriend then 3 years after having his best friend die because of a car accident. The man was devastated and he had no religion at hand, he did no believe in such a term as religion. But due to some sessions with the therapist, he started to open up which he often does not do with different people. He became a better person and started to see his faults to what he said. With the different cases presented it narrows down how man is deeply affected to what he believes in or what some people call a person’s faith. It shows how a person is of great deal with his culture and with this culture, it directs his beliefs in life.
